SAYBROOK — The Saybrook Plaza Shopping Center has welcomed a new addition, with the opening of Fashion For Less, a discount clothing store offering brand-name overstock apparel.
Owner Vinay Sikka, who currently resides in Colorado, said the store officially opened last Sunday, catering to budget-conscious shoppers.
He believes the store is a perfect match for the community, which has limited options for affordable clothing, aside from Walmart in Ashtabula Township.
The Saybrook Plaza Shopping Center is located at 2460 West Prospect Rd.
“It’s a very blue-collar neighborhood and it fits in the, you know, into the budget,” Sikka said. “I didn’t think I was going to do that well, but it’s doing very good. We are happy with the performance as a brand new store. Our biggest attraction is Giant Eagle and Big Lots. They bring a lot of people in.“
Sikka said he has other Fashion For Less locations in Kansas City and the Chicago area.
“We are selling their same product, which is we buy from wholesalers and that’s their stuff,” Sikka said. “Costco, Walmart, Target, could be anybody, Macy’s, whoever has overstock.”
Since the opening, the store has been well-received.
Store Manager Shania Feliciano said there are clothing for children, women and men. There is currently summer items priced at $5 in the back of the store, with plans to do the same for winter clothing.
“We see a lot of ages,” she said. “Everyone is so nice. We would like to give them an affordable price, because it’s Ashtabula.”
Feliciano said there are plans to offer perfume, cosmetics and accessories.
Sikka believes his efforts to bring new businesses to the area will help revitalize the shopping center.
In addition to Fashion For Less, he plans to open another business called Appliance For Less, which will sell discounted brand-new appliances with minor scratches or dents at reduced prices.
“We’re selling brand-new appliances minus scratch and dents on it for half-price, and will be a direct competition to Home Depot and Lowe’s, where they sell for full price,” Sikka said. “My goal is to put a couple of my own businesses in. This center’s been quiet for a long time. It’s needed, there’s nothing else around. The goal is to fill up the center with any and every tenant.”
Potential tenants include One Senior Care and Family Farm and Home.
With the holiday shopping season approaching, it was good timing for the introduction of a new store.
“People are coming in buying a $100-150 worth of clothes and they’re doing their whole Christmas shopping for their kids and grandkids,” Sikka said.
As the store continues to grow, he hopes to hire more local staff and expand his inventory to meet demand.
