When it comes to fashion, it can be hard to find your groove in each emerging decade—the silhouettes that worked in your 20s might not feel like the right fit in your 50s. However, designers are finally waking up to the idea that ageism does exist in the fashion industry, thanks to style influencers over the age of 50, who are letting the world know that a chic wardrobe is for all seasons of life.
While celebrities and the red carpet landscape are an essential part of the fashion zeitgeist, so too are style tastemakers over the age of 50. They might not be invited to the Met Gala or New York Fashion Week, but they have made a space for themselves thanks to the rise of social media and will find inspiration from the biggest catwalks and chicest runways to bring into the casual fashion vernacular.
In fact, their social media presence might be even more crucial than celebrity style icons, like Jennifer Lopez, Victoria Beckham or Tracee Ellis Ross, because influencers make fashion accessible.
Ari Seth Cohen, photographer, filmmaker and author of Advanced Style, which focuses on style for people over 60, explained why Gen X and Boomers are turning fashion ageism on its head.
“In America, once you turn a certain age, you’re sort of forgotten, you’re sort of made to feel that you’re invisible,” he told the New York Times in 2011. “What I’m trying to do is give these women a voice and also show people that your life doesn’t end at 50.”
Fashion influencers have pushed that movement forward over the last 15 years, and it has forced designers to realize that their audience could be much larger if they create fashion for every decade of life.
“The women who I photograph are confident,” Cohen added. “They know what they like, they know what suits their bodies and they’re dressing for themselves. They don’t dress based on trends.” In turn, “young people are inspired by the style,” which makes them “inspired by the attitude.”
That’s why we’ve curated a list of 30 incredible tastemakers, who are redefining beauty and making sure they’re represented in the fashion space.
From bold to chic, quirky to classic, there’s a style to fit every personality out there—it’s about wearing your confidence and ditching antiquated wardrobe standards dictated by society. So, wear that miniskirt, add a print and accessorize the outfit of your dreams—fashion doesn’t have an expiration date.
Gym Tan
Gym Tan loves “channeling [her] mom’s timeless elegance” and “feminine style” with her own “modern take” fashion. From TikTok to Instagram, her followers resoundingly adore the 63-year-old former fashion apparel executive’s advice. ” A lot of older women don’t see their value anymore. So what I’m doing is a pleasant surprise,” she told Women’s Health last year. “As you get older, you can push boundaries.” And yes, that includes pushing those wardrobe boundaries.

Grece Ghanem wants her followers to know that she’s all about “fashion and confidence as style has no age!” She’s a former microbiologist turned fashion influencer and she’s known for her chic European style. At 57, she can easily rock a 1980s-inspired rugby shirt as effortlessly as a sparkly purple bikini. Ghanem is also adept at mixing high-end designers with affordable brands like J. Crew, so her style can be easily imitated with any budget.
Beverly Johnson
Beverly Johnson is a fashion icon! Her supermodel status is legendary after becoming the first Black woman on the cover of Vogue. She’s showing the younger generations how it’s done by hitting the runway from time to time at the age of 71, but it’s her elegance and grace that is completely mesmerizing. “I celebrate every step of the way with anything I do,” she told Palm Springs Life. “If something doesn’t work out, at least you appreciate the work you put in. Otherwise, you don’t have the energy to go on to the next thing.”
Jenna Lyons
Jenna Lyons is described by Vogue as “quirky yet fashionable” because of her penchant for “wearing sequins during the day and sporting denim as eveningwear.” There are no rules for the 55-year-old fashion designer, who formerly ruled the mid-aughts as the creative director of J. Crew and now buzzes about Bravo TV as a cast member of The Real Housewives of New York City (Yes, she wore jeans to the reunion!). One of her most famous quotes as a tastemaker should echo in all of our heads anytime we feel insecure about what we are wearing, but make sure you hear it in Apfel’s blunt, but confident, voice, “You have to be true to yourself, you have to know yourself. Not be a trend follower. You’ve got to learn to take a few risks.”

Lynette believes her style is “classic but not conservative” and every outfit deserves a “statement piece.” There’s also one thing that the 58-year-old fashion content creator will never ask herself and it’s an important one to remember: “Am I too old for this?” So, toss those words right out of your style vocabulary now.
